Side Street Inn’s Kapahulu “On Da Strip” is gearing up for its last call, with the beloved neighborhood spot set to shut down after the first week of April as the owners prepare to relocate into Waikiki. The move shifts a longtime local hangout closer to the resort corridor, while the restaurant’s West Side outpost stays put.
Lease talks and timeline
Owners Lisa Meyer and Cheryl DeAngelo say they are in the final stretch of nailing down a lease for a new Waikiki location and will share the exact address once the ink is dry, according to KHON2. The Kapahulu spot, a familiar face on the strip for years, is scheduled to close after the first week of April so the team can focus on the transition.
Owners: a new chapter
“We are super excited about the new location and the new chapter. Moving to Waikiki is a big deal,” Meyer and DeAngelo told KHON2. They added that the exact reopening date in Waikiki will depend on how the buildout goes and how quickly the timing falls into place.
What stays open
The rest of the Side Street operations are staying in the game. Haliʻa by Side Street Inn at Wai Kai in Ewa Beach and the Ala Moana location on Hopaka Street will continue to serve customers, according to the Side Street Inn website. Honolulu Magazine has previously chronicled the owners’ push into Ewa Beach and the launch of the Haliʻa concept, framing the Kapahulu move as part of a broader growth streak for the brand.
How local diners might feel
Shifting the Kapahulu outpost into Waikiki means Side Street Inn is trading a neighborhood late-night hangout vibe for a busier tourist corridor, a noticeable tweak to Oʻahu’s dining map that has not gone unnoticed by locals. Hawaii News Now recently spotlighted the relocation and the owners’ roadmap for what comes next.
What to watch next
Meyer and DeAngelo say they will reveal the Waikiki address once the lease is officially wrapped up and are aiming to keep the disruption as light as possible for staff and regulars.
