North Miami Beach is gearing up for a big food giveaway this Saturday, March 7, as the city rolls out an NMB CARES community nutrition distribution at Highland Village Park. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., residents can pick up free groceries and tap into wellness resources, with volunteers and city staff on hand to help people who might be hit hard by looming changes to federal SNAP benefits.
Commissioner Daniela Jean, who pushed for the effort, says the city is moving quickly to keep kitchen tables full. "The city is about ensuring that no family in our community is left without access to healthy food," she told WLRN. In addition to groceries, the event will feature nutrition information, wellness tools and referrals to local health services.
Why the city is stepping in
The city is responding to recent shifts in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that tighten work requirements and roll back exemptions for several vulnerable groups, including people experiencing homelessness, some veterans and young adults aging out of foster care. Those changes could cut the average monthly SNAP rolls by about 2.4 million people over the next decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office, AP reports. Cities across the country have been scrambling to fill the gap with more local food support.
How the city will use emergency funds
To get ahead of a potential crunch, the North Miami Beach City Commission declared a local food-security emergency and approved up to $100,000 for emergency food aid and outreach, according to the formal resolution posted by the City of North Miami Beach. The money, which includes reallocated donated funds from Coastal Waste & Recycling, will support partnerships with schools, nonprofits and neighborhood groups, as well as a public information campaign that lays out available food resources.
Saturday's distribution is one of the first big rollouts under that plan and is being organized with MJD Wellness and Community Center at Highland Village Park, according to the City of North Miami Beach.
What residents can expect
Residents who turn out on Saturday can pick up bags of groceries and get one-on-one help from volunteers and city staff, who will be sharing nutrition tips and connecting people to other services, WLRN reports. City officials are urging people to arrive early, since food will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
The city has been here before. Earlier food giveaways drew hundreds of families as prices climbed and household budgets tightened, Local 10 reported in February.
For more information, residents can check the event listing or call the City Manager's Office at 305-948-2900, according to the City of North Miami Beach. City leaders say NMB CARES is just the opening move in a broader outreach campaign as the federal SNAP changes start to land.
