A tense Saturday evening in South Deering ended without injuries after a 52-year-old man barricaded himself inside a home with a 4-year-old boy, prompting a heavy police and SWAT response, authorities said.
The standoff unfolded around 5:45 p.m. in the 1800 block of East 95th Street, according to police. Officers ultimately forced their way into the home, removed the child, and took the man into custody.
What Police Say
Officers were first called to the scene for a report of a physical altercation, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Police escorted a woman out of the house, the outlet reported, before the man locked himself inside with the 4-year-old.
SWAT officers were brought in as the situation escalated. According to the Sun-Times account, officers eventually entered the home, got the child safely outside, and placed the man under arrest. The initial report did not list any charges.
Child Taken for Observation
Police said the boy was not hurt but was taken to Comer Children's Hospital for evaluation. UChicago Medicine lists Comer Children's Hospital at 5721 S. Maryland Avenue in Hyde Park. That is where the child was evaluated after the incident.
Far South Side Context
The South Deering response is one of several recent barricade calls on Chicago's Far South Side that have drawn SWAT units and sizable officer deployments. A similar scene played out in nearby South Shore earlier this year during a pre-dawn SWAT operation that quickly locked down a residential block.
