Bowling, arcade games and cocktails are lining up for a closer shot at campus life, as Star Lanes, the Polaris-area boutique bowling and entertainment center, plans a second Columbus location near The Ohio State University, the company's owners say. The brothers are pitching a roughly 30,000-square-foot venue with bowling, arcade games, dining and drinks, and are targeting a mid-to-late 2027 opening.
Co-owner Doug Mechling told What Now Columbus that "food and beverage is the driver," and said the Mechling brothers are already in talks with Ohio State as they evaluate potential sites. The idea is to bring the suburban entertainment experience closer to students, families and corporate groups who currently trek to Polaris for bigger options.
Polaris Is The Blueprint
Star Lanes Polaris opened in 2013 next to Polaris Fashion Place, and the original location occupies roughly 35,000 square feet with lanes, an arcade, billiards, darts and a 4D theater ride, plus a full restaurant and bar, according to Star Lanes. The Polaris venue also offers private party rooms and event space, a format the owners say they plan to adapt for a campus-side concept.
Industry Recognition
The Mechlings have been raising Star Lanes' profile within the amusement world. Star Lanes Polaris was listed among finalists for the AAMA's 2026 Family Entertainment Center of the Year, per Amusement Today. That kind of industry nod helps explain why the owners are confidently pursuing a second location closer to downtown Columbus and the university.
Menu, Timeline And Why Ohio State
What Now Columbus reports the new venue will be roughly 30,000 square feet and that Star Lanes is working with an executive chef to create a more upscale menu for the second concept. The owners are aiming for a mid-to-late 2027 opening, and the outlet says the official address and opening date will be released in the coming months.
Ohio State's recent enrollment figures, roughly 67,000 students across campuses, provide a sizable built-in audience for walk-in and group business, according to Ohio State. If the plan holds, a campus-side Star Lanes would put a suburban-scale entertainment complex within easier reach of students and city residents who currently travel to Polaris for those amenities. Owners say they will firm up the site and menu in the months ahead, and local diners and students will be watching for the formal announcement.
