What started as a late-night traffic stop in Jacksonville's Talleyrand neighborhood turned into a tense standoff on Monday, when someone inside a nearby home opened fire multiple times at officers. Police had chased at least two people from a stopped car to a house on East 28th Street, where shots rang out. One person was taken into custody, and officials said no officers or members of the public were hit.
How It Unfolded
According to a social media post from the Jax Sheriff's Office, officers tried to pull over a vehicle at East 26th Street and Haines Street at about 10:55 p.m. At least two people jumped out of the car and ran, and officers followed them to the 2800 block of East 28th Street in Talleyrand.
Once officers reached the area, someone inside a residence fired several rounds at them, and deputies returned fire, the agency said. The post notes that one suspect was detained at the scene, while searches continued for another person who fled from the stopped vehicle.
Officer Response And Custody
The same post, which included remarks from Commander Jordan Dowling, stated that nobody was hit by the gunfire. One suspect was taken into custody, and another ran from the stopped vehicle, according to the Jax Sheriff's Office.
Investigators said they were still looking for the person who fled and that, at this early stage, they had not established any connection between the people involved in the traffic stop and the individual who fired from inside the residence. The agency asked anyone with information to call the sheriff's non-emergency tip line at 904-630-0500.
Investigation And Oversight
Officer-involved shootings in Jacksonville undergo a review process that can include the State Attorney's Office and internal transparency reports, as local outlets have reported in recent years. News4JAX has outlined how those reviews work, including how and when body camera footage is selectively released, offering some context for what typically follows after an exchange of gunfire.
Officials said more information on Monday night's incident will be released after detectives complete interviews and finish collecting evidence.
