An apparent burglary ring has been working its way through gated neighborhoods in the southern part of Montgomery County this week, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, and the crew has zeroed in on high-end jewelry taken from inside homes. Deputies say they have identified a person of interest and are urging residents to tighten up home security while the investigation continues.
Detectives with MCSO say they are investigating more than 15 burglaries in Grogan's Point, Hollymead, Carlton Woods and Palmer Woods, all tied to a crew that has been "primarily targeting jewelry." Investigators told reporters they are combing through surveillance video from several incidents and may release footage publicly as new leads develop, according to KHOU.
Authorities are looking for 35-year-old Jose Ignacio Venegas Nieto, who also goes by Fernando Rodriguez. He is described as a Hispanic male with a tattoo on his left forearm that reads "Lilian." Investigators say Nieto has two active warrants for engaging in organized criminal activity and that deputies believe he is connected to an international theft network operating across multiple states, as reported by KBTX.
The sheriff's office has urged homeowners to request a vacation watch when they leave town, keep interior lights on in common and rear areas, and always arm their alarm systems. Officials also recommend upgrading to cameras with night vision and motion sensors, installing glass-break detectors, and photographing valuables and recording serial numbers in a secure location, according to KHOU.
What Investigators Say
Deputies say they are coordinating with local, state and federal partners as the probe widens, and they are asking anyone who spots the suspect to avoid confronting him and call 911 instead. Tips for the Property Crimes Division can be submitted at 281-297-6540, and anonymous information may be left with Multi-County Crime Stoppers at 800-392-STOP (7867). Callers are asked to reference case numbers 24A312239, 25A033931 or 25A356385, according to KBTX.
How To Protect Your Home
Investigators say that beyond alarms and cameras, small changes can make a home less attractive to burglars. They advise keeping jewelry locked in safes, avoiding visible displays of valuables, using light timers or smart bulbs, and sharing travel plans only with trusted neighbors or property managers. Photographing and cataloging expensive items and storing that information offsite can also help speed recovery efforts and insurance claims if something is stolen.
Warrants And Legal Status
Officials say the warrants allege Nieto engaged in organized criminal activity. As of publication, no local arrest in Montgomery County had been announced and the investigation remains active. Law enforcement has cautioned that the case may involve associates beyond a single individual and reiterated that members of the public should report suspicious activity rather than attempting any form of arrest.
Montgomery County detectives say they will update the public if new evidence or video becomes available and have asked anyone with footage or tips to contact law enforcement instead of confronting potential suspects.
