An 18-year-old woman died after she was hit by a car while crossing a busy southwest Houston street on Friday, according to Houston police. The crash happened near the 3200 block of Hillcroft Avenue. She was rushed to a hospital and was pronounced dead there the following day.
Houston police said a green Hyundai Genesis ran a red light and struck the pedestrian as she crossed, and that the driver stayed at the scene. Houston Fire Department paramedics took her to the hospital, and the investigation is still active, as reported by MyTexasDaily.
Hillcroft Already Targeted For Safety Work
Hillcroft Avenue has already been under the microscope for traffic safety as part of the city’s Vision Zero program, which lists a Hillcroft safety project finished in May 2022, according to the City of Houston Vision Zero report. The report notes that pedestrians make up a significant share of Houston’s traffic deaths and highlights speeding, impaired driving and drivers ignoring traffic signals as recurring factors in deadly crashes.
Investigation Underway
Houston police said the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will handle identifying the victim and notifying her next of kin. Detectives are still gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact investigators as they work to piece together what happened, per MyTexasDaily.
Traffic safety advocates and planners have pushed for more protected crossings, shorter crossing distances and better bus-stop placement along Hillcroft to slow drivers and keep people on foot safer. The Vision Zero report lists those kinds of redesigns as key to the city’s strategy to curb deadly crashes. For neighbors, this latest loss is a painful reminder of how dangerous it can be to walk in parts of Houston built primarily around car traffic instead of people.
