Houston police are asking the public to help identify a man accused of trying to get an 8-year-old girl into his vehicle in the 6200 block of Haskell Street on Aug. 16. The suspect is described only as a bald Black male with tattoos on his face and arms, and he remains unidentified nearly three weeks after the alleged encounter.
The appeal came in a post from Houston Police on X, asking, “Do you recognize this male? He is accused of asking an 8-year-old girl to get into his vehicle in the 6200 block of Haskell Street on Aug. 16.” The block sits in Houston's Crestwood neighborhood, an affluent residential area that borders Memorial Park and its trails, according to Redfin. The address is also about a tenth of a mile from HISD's Memorial Elementary School and within four blocks of St. Theresa Catholic School, per Compass Real Estate.
Major Assaults Division Leads the Investigation
The case has been assigned to HPD's Major Assaults Division, which handles non-family adult assaults and kidnapping cases that aren't actively in progress, according to the City of Houston. Anyone with information is asked to call that unit at 713-308-8800 or reach out to Crime Stoppers of Houston, rather than relying on the department's X account, which the department notes is not monitored around the clock. For urgent tips or active emergencies, police say to call 911 or the non-emergency line at 713-884-3131.
Stranger-initiated luring attempts on public streets are statistically far rarer than family-related abductions or runaway cases, which is part of why law enforcement treats reports of unknown adults approaching children with such urgency, per prior Hoodline reporting on similar incidents. It is not yet known publicly whether investigators have obtained neighborhood surveillance footage or license plate reader data, nor whether they've developed a description of the suspect's vehicle beyond his physical appearance.
Potential Charges if a Suspect Is Identified
If a suspect is eventually identified and charged, Texas law offers several possible avenues for prosecutors. Under Texas Penal Code § 25.04, enticing a child is defined as knowingly or intentionally attempting to persuade or remove a minor under 18 from a legal guardian's custody, with penalties ranging from a Class B misdemeanor up to a third-degree felony if committed alongside intent to commit a separate felony, according to Justia Law. Separately, Texas Penal Code § 20.03 classifies kidnapping — intentionally or knowingly abducting another person without consent — as a third-degree felony as well. A third-degree felony conviction in Texas carries a prison term of two to 10 years.
A Similar Case From Last Year
This isn't the first time HPD and Crime Stoppers have made a public plea over a threat to a child in a central Houston neighborhood. In January 2025, the two agencies issued a similar call for help after a suspect allegedly engaged in inappropriate touching of a 7-year-old child in the 800 block of Omar Street, according to Crime Stoppers of Houston records. For now, the man accused of approaching the girl on Haskell Street has not been named or apprehended, and police are treating him as an unidentified person of interest rather than a confirmed suspect.
