Two children were killed and two adults hospitalized after a house fire in Leland on Thursday, a deadly blaze that drew state investigators to a quiet street just outside Wilmington, officials said.
SBI Called In After Early Response
The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office was first on the scene at a home on Grist Creek Wynd and requested help from the State Bureau of Investigation as crews worked the site, according to Spectrum News. Authorities have not released the names of the victims, and officials had not publicly updated the conditions of the two injured adults at last check.
Deadly Fires Still Taking a Heavy Toll Statewide
The North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal's 2025 Fire Fatality Report logged 137 fatal fire incidents and 159 civilian fire deaths last year. The report also noted that 18 multi‑fatality incidents accounted for 40 deaths, which is roughly 25% of the total number of fire deaths across the state, according to the report. The OSFM urged communities to bolster senior‑focused fire safety efforts, expand free smoke alarm installation and steer prevention funding more strategically in hopes of cutting future losses.
Fire Safety Basics: Alarms and a Two‑Minute Exit Plan
Community fire‑prevention drives often team up with local departments to offer free smoke alarm installation. The American Red Cross' national "Sound the Alarm" Home Fire Campaign has installed millions of smoke alarms across the country and provides home fire safety visits, per the American Red Cross. Fire officials continue to hammer home the same basic advice: install working smoke alarms in every bedroom, test them once a month and practice a home escape plan that gets everyone out in about two minutes.

The SBI investigation into what sparked the Leland house fire is ongoing, and officials say no further information has been released at this time, according to Spectrum News. Local authorities have not provided a timeline for when they might release the victims' identities or announce an official cause.
