A Sunday morning hike in eastern Putnam County turned grim when a group of hikers discovered a partially decomposed body near Monterey, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies and investigators responded to the area and remained on scene as they worked to identify the person and determine the circumstances of the death. Sheriff Eddie Farris said his investigators are reviewing recent missing person reports from across the county and the state as they pursue leads.
Investigators at the Scene
As reported by WVLT, Farris said deputies were working near Monterey and that his office is "diligently looking back at previous missing persons cases" to help identify the deceased. The sheriff’s statement added that detectives are exploring "any and all other avenues" that could produce a match and asked for patience while forensic work continues.
How Identification Can Take Time
Decomposition and remote recovery locations can complicate and slow identification, sometimes requiring specialized lab work. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation notes its Unidentified Human Remains initiative uses advanced DNA sequencing and forensic genetic genealogy to help identify victims in long unsolved cases.
