Crash Shuts Down Stretch Of U.S. 90A
The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to the wreck along westbound U.S. 90A between Pitts Road and Harlem Road, where three people were pronounced dead at the scene. Three others were hurt and taken to nearby hospitals, including the driver of a truck and two passengers from the other vehicle.
As crews worked to investigate and clear the debris, both directions of U.S. 90A between Harlem Road and Pitts Road were closed to traffic, according to KHOU.
Officials Warn Drivers To Steer Clear
Precinct 3 Commissioner Andy Meyers urged drivers to stay away from the crash zone, telling motorists to "avoid the area and use alternate routes," as reported by KHOU. Traffic was diverted onto nearby surface streets while first responders tended to the injured and worked to reopen the highway.
Construction, Closures And Traffic Headaches
The section of U.S. 90A where the crash occurred has already been a hassle for drivers, thanks to a multi-million-dollar TxDOT project that has triggered periodic lane closures and overnight detours. Those construction-related slowdowns can stack up quickly when a serious crash hits the same stretch of road. According to ABC13, drivers should expect intermittent work zones in the area as the project moves forward.
The cause of Sunday's crash is still under investigation, the sheriff's office said in its initial statement. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office.
