Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a one-night crackdown in Uptown under the banner Operation Queen City Safe packed in a remarkable haul. During the March 26 sweep, officers reported 170 traffic stops, 55 citations and 18 arrests, along with 11 seized firearms and roughly 1,262.2 grams of suspected narcotics. The department added that officers recovered $1,353 in cash, executed a search warrant and saturated popular Center City hangouts in an effort to clamp down on narcotics activity, reckless driving and street takeovers.
Police tally the stops, guns and cash
According to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department post, the March 26 operation leaned on high-visibility patrols and proactive enforcement to pull illegal guns off the street, seize suspected narcotics and crack down on reckless drivers. Along with the 170 traffic stops and 55 citations, officers reported 18 people taken into custody and one search warrant executed during the sweep. Police say the effort was part deterrent and part cleanup, with officers also recovering $1,353 in cash while working the Uptown grid.
The department credited backup from North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement, the Mecklenburg County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and the FBI, noting that the partner agencies helped fuel the wide-ranging enforcement push.
Uptown parks under the spotlight
CMPD said patrols zeroed in on Romare Bearden Park, First Ward Park and Third Ward Park in Uptown, targeting spots that tend to draw crowds when the weather cooperates. Romare Bearden Park is commonly listed at 300 S Church St, according to TripHobo. First Ward Park runs along East Seventh Street near the ImaginOn complex, as listed by UptownCharlotte. Third Ward Park also drew extra attention from patrol units during the operation, the department said.
From seasonal blitz to year-round campaign
Operation Queen City Safe is CMPD's citywide follow up to the department's seasonal enforcement blitzes, a rebrand officials rolled out earlier this year and detailed in CMPD's crime crackdown goes full time. Under the new banner, similar deployments have played out across Charlotte. A sweep in Steele Creek in late February produced comparable numbers, with dozens of arrests, eight guns seized and roughly 1.2 pounds of suspected narcotics, according to reporting by WBTV.
The department has said the model pairs traffic enforcement with targeted patrols and intelligence from partner agencies, the kind of mix CMPD hopes will make would-be offenders think twice before bringing guns or drugs into busy public spaces.
What happens to the 18 people arrested
