Houston’s Chinatown corridor just landed a caffeine heavyweight. Trung Nguyen Legend, one of Vietnam’s most recognizable coffee brands, has opened a sprawling sit-down café at 11754 Bellaire Blvd. #100. The 4,700-square-foot shop soft-opened on March 10 and is planning a grand-opening party with lion dancers this Saturday. Inside the pale, arch-lined space, about 130 seats are already filling up with customers lining up for coconut coffees, egg-topped drinks and other viral Vietnamese-style lattes.
A Houston flagship
Owners Harry Nguyen and David Ho signed the lease back in 2022 and chose the Trung Nguyen Legend brand because they wanted a more leisurely, social coffee experience for local residents, according to the Houston Chronicle. The outlet reports that construction and contractor delays pushed the opening back several years, and that the owners expect the café to host everything from family meals to business meetups and casual coffee dates. Nguyen told the Chronicle, “We felt like Houston needed one,” and the partners plan to add pho and bánh mì a few days after the grand opening.
What to order
The Houston menu leans into showmanship without scaring off everyday coffee drinkers. Trung Nguyen’s lineup includes the brand’s signature “Zen” kettle, the “Roman” carafe with condensed milk and the copper-set “Ottoman,” as detailed by Trung Nguyen Legend. A full menu, along with early customer praise for the egg coffee and a peek at shelves stocked with packaged beans for take-home brewing, appears on the Trung Nguyen Legend Bellaire site. Expect everything from traditional phin brews to pandan and sea-salt-cream lattes, plus rotating specialty drinks.
Where it fits in Houston
Houston is not exactly new territory for the brand. A faster, counter-service Trung Nguyen E-Coffee already operates nearby at 9750 Bellaire Blvd., Suite 188, according to Trung Nguyen E-Coffee. The Houston Chronicle reports that this Bellaire shop is the first sit-down Trung Nguyen Legend café in Texas and notes that co-owner David Ho backpacked across Vietnam to test dishes before returning to help run the space. The owners say the Bellaire storefront has already turned into a gathering spot for Houston’s Vietnamese community and curious coffee fans who are in no hurry to give up their seats.
Bigger picture
Trung Nguyen Legend is part of a 30-year-old company that says it operates roughly 1,000 locations worldwide and is planning additional U.S. openings, according to Trung Nguyen Legend. The Bellaire outpost will serve as an early test of how theatrical Vietnamese-style coffee plays in Houston, and the owners say they hope it evolves into a kind of neighborhood living room, the sort of place where people linger over long cups of coffee and steaming bowls of pho.
