AZDPS says arrest carried out with U.S. Marshals' help
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said in a post on X that detectives from its Vehicular Crimes Unit, working with the U.S. Marshals Service, took Mickelson into custody outside a convenience store in Salt Lake City last Thursday, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Investigators said she had fled Arizona and established residence in Utah before the arrest. She was booked into the Weber County Jail, per the Weber County Sheriff's Office, and is being held without bond pending extradition to Yavapai County.
What investigators say happened on U.S. 93
Investigators say the two-vehicle crash occurred when a vehicle crossed the center line and struck a Toyota Sienna minivan near milepost 175. Three people in the minivan died at the scene and several others were hurt. As reported by Arizona's Family, first responders pulled children from the wreckage and rushed them to area hospitals. At the time, local troopers said impairment had not been ruled out while investigators continued to piece together what led to the deadly impact on the stretch northwest of Wickenburg.
Charges, alleged impairment and next steps
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Mickelson now faces three counts of second-degree murder, two counts of felony endangerment, seven counts of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated DUI, and one count of criminal damage. Detectives said their investigation determined Mickelson's BMW drove across the center line and struck the minivan while she was impaired. Yavapai County prosecutors will review the case and set formal charges and arraignment dates once she is returned to Arizona.
