A late Saturday night out on Milwaukee's Water Street strip ended in tragedy, as an overnight shooting near a cluster of downtown bars left at least one person dead and multiple others wounded early Sunday, authorities said. The gunfire erupted around 1 a.m. near the intersection of North Water Street and East Knapp Street, jolting the busy entertainment corridor and sending squads racing to secure the scene, as per WISN 12 News.
Officers were called to the area around 1 a.m., and the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed it had been notified, indicating a fatality at the scene, according to WISN 12 News. The station reported that multiple people were shot as investigators fanned out to collect evidence and interview witnesses.
Milwaukee School of Engineering Public Safety told WISN 12 News that "nobody from the school was involved and there is no threat to the campus," and urged students and staff to steer clear of the area while police work the case. MSOE officials added that the victims were not connected to campus activity.
Pattern of late-night violence on Water Street
This latest eruption of violence lands on a nightlife district that has already been on edge. Recent weekend shootings near the downtown bar zone have rattled nearby residents and business owners, who are watching a pattern they would rather not see solidify. TMJ4 reported that witnesses have shared cellphone video that shows crowds scattering after shots, and that officers, including mounted units, are routinely deployed on packed nights. Those recurring incidents have reignited debate over how to keep Water Street lively without letting it turn volatile.
City rolls out stepped-up enforcement
City officials have responded with a downtown safety plan that adds more late-night patrols, tightens curfew enforcement and looks at new partnerships with private security, according to FOX6 Milwaukee. Mayor Cavalier Johnson told the station he was "championing solutions" in the wake of a series of shootings and said the city would keep tweaking the strategy to make sure people feel safe downtown.
Milwaukee Police say the investigation into Sunday's shooting remains very much active and that no suspect information has been released. Anyone who knows anything is urged to call Milwaukee Police at (414) 935-7360 or Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-TIPS, contact numbers reported by TMJ4.
Authorities had not released the names of the victims or any possible charges as of Sunday morning. Detectives continue to canvas the surrounding blocks and review video footage from the area. This remains a developing story and will be updated as officials release more information.
