A Saturday evening paddle off Wellfleet ended in tragedy when a 22-year-old kayaker died after his boat overturned, according to local officials. Rescuers pulled him from the water and rushed him to a hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities are withholding his name until family members can be notified.
According to Boston 25 News, the Wellfleet Fire Department was alerted around 6 p.m. to a kayaker in distress off Wellfleet Harbor. Responders reported seeing a blue kayak drifting in the current, with the paddler wearing a green life jacket.
The Wellfleet harbormaster deployed two boats, staffed by harbormaster and fire personnel, while Eastham’s harbormaster also responded with a boat to assist. A shoreline search was conducted with help from the town’s shellfish warden. Crews found the kayaker at approximately 8:02 p.m., transported him to a hospital in critical condition and he was later pronounced deceased, Boston 25 News reported.
Search Spanned Local Harbormasters and Coast Guard Aircraft
On Cape Cod, it is common for multiple agencies to jump in when someone goes missing on the water. Harbormasters, local fire and police departments, and state and federal partners routinely team up to cover tricky tidal channels and long stretches of shoreline.
The U.S. Coast Guard frequently provides aircraft or cutter support in searches that demand quick coverage or hoist capability, a role outlined in a regional press release from the U.S. Coast Guard.
Cold Water and Life Jackets
Massachusetts law requires kayakers to wear personal flotation devices from Sept. 15 to May 15, and state boating-safety officials warn that warm spring air can easily hide how dangerously cold the water still is. Sudden immersion in cold water can trigger an immediate gasp reflex and rapid swim failure long before full-blown hypothermia, according to safety guidance from Mass.gov and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Those risks are why officials keep hammering the basics: always wear a properly fitted life jacket and dress for the water temperature, not just the air.
How Paddlers Can Reduce Risk
Safety advocates urge paddlers to keep a life jacket on at all times, carry some way to call for help and file a float plan with someone on shore before launching. Federal boating-safety resources also recommend making sure your PFD is the right type and fit, keeping it readily accessible and checking marine forecasts before you head out, as outlined by U.S. Coast Guard Boating Safety.
Investigators have not released additional details on the Wellfleet incident. Boston 25 News reports that the victim’s identity remains under wraps while relatives are notified. Local officials have asked anyone with information to contact the Wellfleet Fire Department or police. More information is expected as authorities continue their investigation.
