A terrifying few minutes for one West Philadelphia family ended in relief on Saturday when a 1-year-old left inside a car that was stolen turned up safe just a few blocks away, according to police.

Officers say the vehicle was taken shortly before noon from the 4000 block of Lancaster Avenue while the toddler was still inside. As reported by NBC10 Philadelphia, police later found the car and the child on the 600 block of North Brooklyn Street, less than half a mile from where it was stolen. Medics checked the youngster at the scene and determined the child was not hurt.

Investigators have not announced any arrests and say the investigation remains active.

Another Close Call In A Growing Pattern

The incident is the latest in a string of close calls across Philadelphia where thieves have driven off in vehicles, only to have police discover that a child was still inside. In one May 2025 case in Germantown, covered by CBS Philadelphia, officers found a sleeping child just a block away from the parking lot where the vehicle had been taken. In a separate episode with similar circumstances, Fox29 reported that another young passenger was also safely located after a car was stolen.

City officials and police have repeatedly warned drivers not to leave vehicles running or children unattended, even for a moment, given how quickly these thefts can unfold.

How To Share Tips With Investigators

Authorities are asking anyone who saw Saturday's theft or who may have relevant video to come forward. According to the City of Philadelphia, tips can be phoned or texted to 215-686-TIPS (8477) or emailed to [email protected]. Investigators say they plan to release more information as the case develops.
