A hidden Mercedes, a pinging AirTag, and a midday traffic stop all came together for San Mateo police on Thursday, ending with one man booked into jail and another cited after a stolen car and various items swiped were recovered.
Officers say a 25-year-old man was arrested and another person was issued a misdemeanor citation after investigators tracked a reported stolen Mercedes to a residential area. Among the items recovered were an Apple MacBook and other property that police say have since been returned to their rightful owners.
According to a post by the San Mateo Police Department, the case started with a stolen-vehicle report from the 300 block of N. Delaware Street. Not long after, an Apple AirTag associated with the stolen car began pinging near Marina Court and Day Avenue. While officers canvassed the neighborhood, they found a Mercedes tucked under a car cover in the area, then pulled over a silver Mercedes sedan at about 12:13 PM as part of the investigation.

How Police Zeroed In on the Car
Investigators say the Apple AirTag hidden in the stolen Mercedes kept pinging in the Marina Court and Day Avenue area, giving officers a digital breadcrumb trail that helped them narrow their search and spot the covered vehicle. Consumer trackers like AirTags are increasingly turning up in police reports involving stolen cars and gear, and they have helped officers recover vehicles in several recent cases, as reported by iMore. Police are quick to add that while the tech can be handy, owners should leave the actual confrontation to officers.
Who Was Booked and Who Was Cited
San Mateo police say 25-year-old Angel VonBardeleben was arrested and taken to the San Mateo County Jail. He was booked on suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property and grand theft. Officers also contacted 26-year-old Hector Juarez Cruz, who was issued a misdemeanor citation for possession of stolen property tied to an unrelated out-of-state theft, then released. According to the department, all reported stolen items linked to the case were recovered during the search.
What Neighbors Are Urged To Do
Investigators are asking anyone with tips or surveillance footage from the 300 block of N. Delaware Street or the Marina Court and Day Avenue areas to contact San Mateo non-emergency dispatch at (650) 522-7700, per the City of San Mateo. Officials are stressing that residents should not try to track down or reclaim stolen vehicles on their own, even if an AirTag or other tracker gives a precise location. That advice is echoed in reporting on AirTag-related recoveries, which urges victims to hand information to officers and avoid one-on-one showdowns with suspected thieves, according to AppleInsider.
