An Arvada man who worked as an Uber driver is in custody after police say he sexually assaulted a passenger earlier this year, and detectives now want to hear from anyone else who believes they were targeted. Investigators have identified the suspect as Javier Delgado‑Cordoba, who, according to police, turned himself in to the Jefferson County jail on Tuesday.
How detectives say they identified him
Arvada detectives say they secured a warrant following an investigation into an incident that they report occurred in January. According to 9News, investigators identified Delgado‑Cordoba using a rideshare profile, social media and DNA evidence. Police told reporters that Delgado‑Cordoba had driven for Uber for about a year and completed more than 1,000 rides. Authorities also described his vehicle as a light-colored 2023 Kia K5 with license plate 642R DGZ26.
Police message to potential victims
"We want victims to know they are not alone and support is available," Arvada Police Chief Ed Brady said, according to 9News. Investigators said the reported victim in this case was dropped off at a business in another city after the assault, and they believe there may be additional people who have not yet reported similar incidents. Anyone with information is asked to call the Arvada Police tip line at 720-898-7171 and reference case AR26001904.
Rideshare safety in context
The arrest lands amid growing national scrutiny of rideshare safety, with recent jury rulings and lawsuits raising questions about how companies screen and oversee drivers. A recent AP report detailed how courts and juries are wrestling with whether platforms like Uber can be held responsible for drivers' actions. At the state level, Colorado lawmakers have been debating stricter rules for rideshare companies amid similar high-profile cases, as reported by the Colorado Springs Gazette.
What to do if you were affected
Anyone who believes they were victimized during a ride is urged to contact the Arvada Police tip line and consider reaching out to victim-support services. The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) operates a 24/7 hotline and online chat for survivors. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
