Miami’s waterfront is set to turn into a rallying point for Cuba’s exile community Sunday evening, as activists, faith leaders and artists converge on Bayfront Park for a "Free Cuba Rally" that organizers say will push hard for democratic change on the island.
The event is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the FPL Solar Amphitheater in Bayfront Park, with prayers starting an hour earlier at 4 p.m., according to Salvar a Cuba. The online event page lists the Biscayne Boulevard amphitheater as the venue, offers a free-admission registration form and posts contact details for anyone looking to attend or volunteer.
Orlando Gutiérrez Boronat, secretary-general of the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance, has framed the gathering as a push for "real change," including a provisional government and the exit of Cuba's Communist Party. Those goals were laid out at a recent Miami City Hall announcement, as reported by CiberCuba. Miami District 3 Commissioner Rolando Escalona called the city "the cradle of exile" and urged residents to speak with one voice for freedom on the island.
A surge of local demonstrations
Sunday’s event follows a string of recent pro-democracy actions in South Florida. In late March, a "Free Cuba" rally at Milander Park in Hialeah pulled in hundreds of residents, artists and local officials, who pressed for increased pressure on Havana, according to Local 10. Those earlier gatherings blended music and cultural performances with pointed political messages aimed both at U.S. decision-makers and Cuban authorities.
Why organizers say the moment is urgent
Activists backing the Bayfront Park rally point to mounting tensions inside Cuba. The Observatorio Cubano de Conflictos reported 953 protests, denunciations and civic actions in January alone, according to its latest figures. Human rights monitors have also flagged a notable rise in detentions; Prisoners Defenders has identified more than 1,200 people jailed for political reasons, as reported by NBC 6 Miami.
CBS News Miami aired a preview of the weekend’s demonstrations, noting that participants across the city plan to focus on freeing political prisoners, securing humanitarian aid and pressing for a clear roadmap for a transition in Cuba. According to the outlet, rallies are expected at several sites throughout the Miami metro area on Sunday, with Bayfront Park billed as the main focal point.
Organizers describe the Bayfront gathering as an "act of struggle, prayer and culture" and have urged demonstrators to keep things peaceful. More information and registration details are available on the rally’s event page. For direct contact information and volunteer sign-ups, see the official listing at Salvar a Cuba.
