Garden City Mayor Mike Leonhardt, 58, died Tuesday after what friends and colleagues are calling a short battle with cancer, a loss that has left the small Bear Lake community reeling. Beyond city hall, Leonhardt was a familiar face in emergencies as a longtime volunteer firefighter and search-and-rescue responder.
According to an obituary posted by Allen-Hall Mortuary and published by the Logan Herald Journal, Michael Ivan Leonhardt passed away on April 21 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Tami, seven children, and numerous grandchildren. The obituary announces public viewings on Thursday evening and Friday morning, followed by a funeral service scheduled for 12 p.m. on Friday.
Community reaction
KSL reported that Leonhardt was in his third term as mayor at the time of his death. In a tribute, Rep. Blake Moore wrote that Leonhardt “truly embodied what it means to care for your community,” while the Garden City Fire Department remembered him by noting that “Mike was the last volunteer Chief for GCFD and put his heart into it,” adding that firefighters and their families will deeply feel his absence.
Public service and legacy
Leonhardt’s public service record in Garden City stretches back years. He previously served on the Garden City City Council and, according to the town’s official page, worked on regional tourism and water issues that are critical to the lakeside town. He also sat on the Bear Lake Regional Commission, collaborating with neighboring communities on recreation and watershed matters that shape life around Bear Lake.
Residents and local officials say the timing of the loss will be especially tough, coming during the busy spring stretch when leaders are gearing up for summer tourism and water-management work across the region.
