A strange beeping package left on a classroom desk at Sycamore High School set off a full-scale scare Wednesday morning, sending students and staff off campus while authorities checked for explosives. The item ultimately turned out not to be a threat, but the Cheatham County School District kept the high school closed for the rest of the day as a precaution. Parents were directed to pick up students at Sycamore Middle School while buses and student drivers were released, and school officials, as well as law enforcement, later confirmed everyone was safe and no injuries were reported.
Teachers Find Sparks Rapid Response
According to the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office, a teacher spotted the suspicious package in a classroom and heard a beeping sound that raised immediate concern, prompting an evacuation of the building. Agencies from across the area responded while school staff moved students to a secure location away from the high school. As reported by NewsChannel 5, investigators later determined the beeping noise was unrelated to the package itself.
Bomb Robot, K-9s Sweep Campus Clean
Investigators from the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol brought in K-9 units and used a bomb-disposal robot to deal with the package, while bomb-sniffing dogs searched the area and did not pick up any sign of explosives. WSMV reported that about 800 students were evacuated and that the district chose to shut down the campus “out of an abundance of caution.” Families were escorted to the middle school for pickup, and buses, along with student drivers, were released to go home. The campus was cleared early Wednesday morning, according to WSMV.
Security Cameras Folded Into Investigation
As part of the probe, investigators reviewed security-camera footage to see how the package ended up in the classroom and to determine whether it had been placed there intentionally. A report credited to WKRN stated that a K-9 checked the item and did not detect explosive material before Tennessee Highway Patrol personnel carried out a controlled removal. The school received the official all-clear shortly before 8:30 a.m., as reported by WKRN.
Evacuation Comes As Security Upgrades Roll Out
The Sycamore incident unfolded while Cheatham County schools continue rolling out security improvements, including new weapons-detection systems and other safety tools. In March, WSMV reported that districts across Middle Tennessee have been installing OPENGATE and similar devices as part of broader, multi-layered safety plans. Officials have said that technology such as detectors and K-9 teams adds extra protection but does not take the place of a fast law-enforcement response whenever something suspicious surfaces on campus. According to WSMV, the region has been steadily investing in these types of security upgrades.
The Cheatham County School District thanked families for their flexibility and patience and announced that Sycamore High would stay closed on Wednesday as an added safeguard. All students and staff were reported safe, per NewsChannel 5.
