What Officials Reported
In a social media update, Portland Fire & Rescue said crews responded to a fire on a vessel along the Oregon side of the river and extinguished the flames. The bureau reported that both occupants were taken off the vessel and are being evaluated by medical personnel, and that “all persons are accounted for,” according to Portland Fire & Rescue.
Environmental Response And Oversight
The same update noted that environmental response resources had been contacted. In Oregon, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is the lead agency for cleanup of oil and hazardous material releases in state waters and operates a 24-hour spill reporting system, according to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. Residents who notice an oily sheen on the water or see wildlife in distress are asked to report incidents to the Oregon Emergency Response System at 1-800-452-0311.
Local History With Vessel Fires
River fires are not unheard of in the area and often draw multiple agencies to the shoreline. In April 2018 a sailboat caught fire near the Eastbank Esplanade, with no injuries reported, as detailed by KATU.
What Remains Unclear
Portland Fire & Rescue has not yet released the type of vessel involved, the exact location on the river or whether the U.S. Coast Guard established any safety zones related to the incident. The bureau said it would share updates when more information is available, according to Portland Fire & Rescue.
