A Sunday evening commute along Bird Road in southwest Miami-Dade turned into a roadside nightmare when, deputies say, a 37-year-old Westchester man opened fire on another driver, striking the victim’s vehicle twice on the passenger side. The other driver managed to speed away and later report the shooting, and deputies say the gunman threatened to shoot again before taking off, only to be identified and arrested later.

What deputies say

According to investigators, the confrontation started around 5:15 p.m. Sunday between Southwest 117th and 97th avenues, when a driver made an abrupt turn onto Bird Road and began driving erratically, cutting off another motorist. The victim told deputies he continued behind the car and heard a gunshot as both vehicles crossed Southwest 107th Avenue, later discovering two apparent bullet strikes on the passenger side of his vehicle.

Officials say the other driver, identified as 37-year-old Drew Donald Sherwood, stopped between Southwest 94th and 95th avenues, got out, pointed a gun and warned, “Stop following (or) I will shoot you again,” before getting back into his vehicle and reversing toward the victim. Deputies say surveillance video backed up the account, and a photo lineup led to Sherwood’s identification. He now faces attempted second-degree murder with a firearm and aggravated assault with a firearm, according to Local 10.

Charges and custody

The arrest report states Sherwood was booked on attempted second-degree murder with a firearm and aggravated assault with a firearm, with his bond listed as “to be set.” He was taken into custody and processed into the county jail system.

Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, the Miami-Dade Corrections facility listed at 7000 NW 41st Street, handles bookings for pretrial detainees in the county, and the department’s contact page lists booking and general inquiry numbers for TGK and other correctional facilities, according to Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation.

Bird Road context

Bird Road has already seen its share of flashing lights and crime scene tape in recent years, including a 2025 warehouse shooting that briefly closed parts of the corridor. The busy commuter stretch through southwest Miami-Dade remains a frequent backdrop for crash investigations and other law enforcement responses, keeping traffic and safety concerns high on residents’ lists.

Deputies say the Bird Road shooting case remains under active investigation, and no motive has been publicly released. As of Wednesday morning, Sherwood was still being held at TGK with his bond listed as “to be set,” Local 10 reported.
