Gather Bakehouse, the Bay View bakery beloved for its breads, pastries and Sunday hot ham and rolls, will serve its last customers next Sunday, with plans to keep regular hours through that final day and sell remaining inventory while it lasts. The closure caps a short, intense run for the Oklahoma Avenue storefront, which opened in October 2024 and quickly became a neighborhood habit.
Owner Blames Irreparable Boiler Leak
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, owner Brittany Wohlfeil said an irreparable leak in the building’s boiler, which powers the ovens and the proofer, forced her hand. The equipment failure made it impossible to reliably bake and proof the goods the bakery depends on, and fixing it was not an option.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel also reported that Gather will serve its final round of Sunday hot ham and rolls on April 12.
Hours, Address And What’s On The Menu
The Bay View shop sits at 1100 East Oklahoma Avenue, with regular hours listed throughout the week on the official Gather Bakehouse site. The FAQs there confirm what regulars already know: hot ham and rolls are a Sunday ritual, available from 8 a.m. until sellout.
The online menu at Gather Bakehouse highlights a lineup of loaves, croissants, vegan offerings and a monthly sourdough membership that helped fuel the bakery’s following.
Short Run After Rebrand And Consolidation
The Oklahoma Avenue storefront originally opened as Batter & Mac in October 2024 and rebranded to Gather Bakehouse in August 2025 after a partial ownership change. As detailed by OnMilwaukee, the business later shuttered its Menomonee Falls location in October 2025 and consolidated operations in Bay View.
The same OnMilwaukee profile noted the bakery’s focus on Wisconsin ingredients and local partnerships, including supplying baguettes to Mother’s restaurant.
Staff And What Comes Next
Wohlfeil, who also works as a nurse practitioner at Froedert Hospital and has two children at home, encouraged anyone interested in hiring the bakery’s staff to get in touch, as reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The paper noted that Gather Bakehouse will keep its regular schedule through closing and sell through its remaining inventory while supplies last.
Wohlfeil has not said whether she plans to reopen a storefront in the future.
For now, loyal customers have one more week to grab their favorite pastries and that familiar Sunday ham-and-rolls spread. After next weekend, Bay View will be down one more independent bakery as operators across Milwaukee wrestle with rising costs and unforgiving equipment troubles.
