Police and emergency crews flooded the West Charlotte neighborhood yesterday afternoon after an assault call near the West Charlotte Recreation Center on Kendall Drive. Chopper 9 circled overhead as witnesses reported a large fight, with at least two ambulances on scene. Authorities had not released a full account of what happened and said the situation remained under investigation.
What we know so far
As reported by WSOC, Chopper 9 Skyzoom was over the West Charlotte Recreation Center at about 2:40 p.m. Thursday when MEDIC crews confirmed they were responding to an assault call along Kendall Drive. The station reported that at least two ambulances were present and a witness described “a big fight” breaking out. According to WSOC, no additional details were immediately available.
Where it happened
The response centered on the 2400 block of Kendall Drive, outside the West Charlotte Recreation Center at 2401 Kendall Drive. Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation lists the facility and notes it sits just downhill from West Charlotte High School.
Neighborhood context
The Kendall Drive corridor has drawn heavy police attention before. WSOC previously covered a deadly shooting in the same area in 2017 that briefly placed West Charlotte High School on lockdown. That reporting underscores that serious incidents have occurred near the rec center in past years.
