After a chaotic Alumni Weekend marked by fights and weapons on campus, Edward Waters University is shutting down informal spring alumni gatherings at its Jacksonville campus and tightening the rules for any big crowd that wants in.
The university says the decision comes after multiple physically violent altercations involving both alumni and currently enrolled students, with weapons recovered during the early April festivities. Alcohol was also flagged as a factor, according to News4JAX. In a letter to the campus community, leaders wrote, “The safety and well-being of students is, and will remain, the university’s highest priority.”
New Rules for On-Campus Gatherings
From here on out, anyone looking to pack the campus with a large crowd will have to go through formal channels. The university’s letter says organizations and groups must submit official requests and comply with space-rental, staffing and security requirements before hosting sizable events.
Administrators made it clear the school is not footing the bill or taking on the liability for pop-up parties. The letter states that the university “will not assume that level of risk or expense for events that are not formally organized, approved, and managed by the institution,” and notes that more detailed instructions for requesting campus space will be released soon, per News4JAX.

Edward Waters is stressing that alumni are still welcome, but big reunions and celebrations will now need to fit inside a structure the school can safely manage.
