Police say a late-night call in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx ended with officers walking in on a child being sexually assaulted and a 34-year-old man taken into custody on the spot.
What Police Say
According to PIX11, the NYPD says the incident unfolded around 10:30 p.m. Sunday near West 174th Street and Montgomery Avenue. Responding officers arrived to find a child in the middle of a sexual assault, the outlet reports, and immediately detained a 34-year-old man at the scene while medics rushed the victim to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Suspect Identified And Charges
News 12 New York reports sources identified the suspect as 34-year-old Jose Ramos. The outlet says he faces charges that include rape and acting in a manner injurious to a child. That report adds the incident happened inside an apartment on West 174th Street after the victim began watching movies with Ramos, and investigators are still reviewing what, if any, prior relationship existed between them.
Police Response And Next Steps
PIX11 reports detectives remained on the block into the night while officers processed the arrest and the child received medical care. Authorities have not released additional information about the victim. According to both outlets, the Bronx District Attorney’s office will decide on the final slate of charges as detectives continue to dig into the case.
How To Help
The NYPD asks anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or, for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA, according to the NYPD. Police also urge anyone who has video or other evidence to preserve those files and call investigators rather than posting them publicly.
