A routine afternoon outside Buffalo Grove High School turned critical on Tuesday when a vehicle leaving the school’s parking lot hit a utility pole, which then struck a staff member. Buffalo Grove police said officers arrived at the scene around 3:20 p.m., and first responders rushed the employee to a nearby hospital with life‑threatening injuries. Dundee Road was shut down for several hours as emergency crews worked and utility workers made repairs. Police said the driver is cooperating with the investigation.
How The Crash Happened
According to ABC7 Chicago, the chain reaction started when a car trying to exit the school’s parking lot onto Dundee Road left the roadway and struck a pole. That impact caused the pole to hit the staff member. The Buffalo Grove Police Department Traffic Unit and the Major Crash Assistance Team were called in to investigate and reconstruct the scene, the outlet reported.
Road Closure And School Impact
The Village of Buffalo Grove issued a traffic alert stating that Dundee Road was closed between Arlington Heights Road and Old Arlington Heights Road while crews handled the crash scene, according to Patch. Officers provided emergency aid before the staff member was taken to a hospital with life‑threatening injuries, Daily Herald reporting noted. It was not immediately clear whether evening activities at the school were canceled or whether the district planned to release additional information.
Police Response And Investigation
Buffalo Grove Police Chief Brian Budds called the crash “a tragic incident which has deeply impacted our high school community” in a statement to FOX32 Chicago. Authorities said investigators are still reconstructing the crash and have not indicated whether any charges will be filed as the probe continues, with the Traffic Unit working alongside regional crash specialists. The Buffalo Grove Police Department has said more information will be released as it becomes available, according to local reporting.
