A quiet South Side block turned into a homicide scene just after midnight Friday when a bullet from a suspected drive-by tore through the wall of a home and struck a woman in the head, killing her, according to San Antonio police. Officers were called out shortly after midnight and the vehicle believed to have fired the shots had already fled. Five other people were inside the house at the time and were not injured. The San Antonio Police Department says the investigation is ongoing.

According to KABB / Fox San Antonio, officers were dispatched around 12:45 a.m. to a home near Aaron Place and Burton Avenue after reports of gunfire. Police told the station a white Toyota Prius drove past the residence and opened fire, sending multiple rounds into the home. Investigators said one of those rounds traveled through a wall and struck the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspected vehicle left the area before officers arrived.

Another recent drive-by fatality

The South Side killing comes on the heels of a suspected drive-by on the East Side last Wednesday that left a 31-year-old man dead, as reported by KSAT. Together, the incidents highlight a troubling string of vehicle-based shootings that San Antonio police have been tracking across multiple neighborhoods.

Investigation ongoing

Police told KABB / Fox San Antonio that the five people who were inside the home with the victim were taken in for questioning as witnesses and were not hurt. No arrests have been made, and detectives say the case remains active as they sort through leads and review any available footage or witness statements.
