A Butler Area school bus carrying elementary students slid off Shannon Road in Connoquenessing Township earlier this morning, briefly turning a routine ride into a scare for families before most kids were cleared to finish the school trip.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene in Butler County, and parents and guardians were alerted while students were checked out roadside. Officials did not immediately report any serious injuries, and many children were ultimately allowed to continue to Connoquenessing Elementary School.
What the district said
Butler Area School District communications director Kara Droney said the bus went off the road while headed to Connoquenessing Elementary School and that police and emergency medical services responded, according to WTAE. The district said parents and guardians were notified.
"All students are being evaluated by EMS before continuing to school," the district stated, underscoring that medical crews would check every child before anyone was cleared to roll on.
Earlier Connoquenessing crash this year
This is not the first bus incident near Connoquenessing Elementary this year. On Jan. 20, a school bus was involved in a collision near the campus. The Butler Eagle reported that no students were seriously hurt in that earlier crash and that Butler Ambulance Service and the Connoquenessing Volunteer Fire Company responded. Students were checked by school staff after that incident.
Bigger county pattern
The latest Connoquenessing scare also lands in the context of more serious school bus crashes in Butler County. On March 6, 2025, a crash in Adams Township near Mars High School sent seven students and the driver to hospitals, as WTAE reported. Pennsylvania State Police and local law enforcement reconstructed that scene after the crash. Several students needed hospital care but were later discharged, the station noted.
How families can get updates
Families looking for information on bus routes or pickup changes are directed to the Butler Area School District transportation page or to contact the district's transportation office for specific guidance. The Butler Area School District lists transportation contact numbers and advises parents and guardians to use the Tyler Parent Portal for route updates and notifications.
The district did not immediately announce any additional counseling supports in its statement about Wednesday's crash.
Authorities have not yet released a cause for the bus leaving the roadway, and the investigation remains ongoing. This story will be updated as officials release more information.
