Police say a mid-day chase through a Cambridge neighborhood on Friday ended with a wanted 27-year-old in cuffs and a loaded Glock recovered from under a back deck.
Members of the Youth Violence Strike Force arrested the man in Cambridge after a short foot pursuit in the Richdale Avenue area, according to officials. The incident wrapped up when officers found him hiding behind a residence and took him into custody, and a search of the area turned up a gun they say he ditched while running.
How officers tracked the suspect and found the gun
At about 11:52 a.m., members of the Youth Violence Strike Force, working with Boston Housing Police, Massachusetts State Police and Cambridge Police, spotted Daryl Dirtion in the Richdale Avenue area. When he ran, they chased him, according to the Boston Police Department.
During a search along his flight path, officers found a black Carhartt jacket stashed beneath the rear deck of a Pemberton Street home. Inside the jacket was a Glock 22 that police say was loaded with 15 live rounds, according to the department.
Arrest, resistance and medical evaluation
Dirtion, identified as a 27-year-old from South Boston, was eventually located hiding in a shed behind a Middlesex Street residence. He initially resisted arrest, which led a Massachusetts State Police trooper to deploy a taser after verbal warnings, according to a post on the Boston Police Department's official Facebook page.
Police say Dirtion complied after the taser was used. He was evaluated by EMS at the scene and then taken to Boston Medical Center for further evaluation before booking, according to the Facebook post.
Charges and next steps
Boston police say Dirtion was wanted on five outstanding warrants out of Suffolk Superior Court and South Boston District Court. The warrants include charges of carrying a loaded firearm without a license, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and possession of ammunition without an FID card.
According to Boston police, Massachusetts State Police will seek additional charges in Cambridge District Court, including carrying a firearm without a license, second offense, and possession of a large capacity feeding device.
Where this fits in broader enforcement
The Youth Violence Strike Force has been a regular presence in firearm recoveries and arrests across the region this year, part of an ongoing push by city and state agencies to curb gun violence. Recent YVSF operations have led to multiple arrests and weapon seizures, as documented by Boston 25 News.
Court proceedings and formal filings in Dirtion's case are expected in Cambridge District Court. Police did not immediately release bail or arraignment details and said updates will come through standard press channels as charges are formally lodged.
