A violent single-vehicle crash in Homestead on Saturday night left a car that appeared to be a Tesla torn clean in two, with debris scattered across the roadway and stunned neighbors looking on. A 33-year-old and a 9-year-old were airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital and were reported in stable condition as emergency crews worked the scene late into the night.
According to Local 10, the wreck happened along Southwest 272nd Street and 127th Avenue when, officials said, the driver lost control and slammed into a tree. The impact was so severe that station footage shows the vehicle sheared into two separate pieces. The outlet reported that first responders flew both victims to a nearby trauma center.
Victims Taken To Level I Trauma Center
Both patients were airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, which its website identifies as a Level I trauma center equipped to handle complex adult and pediatric emergencies. The hospital notes that it operates a dedicated pediatric emergency room and trauma services that function as a regional referral hub.
Video Shows Devastating Damage
The aftermath was caught on camera as neighbors and passing drivers pulled out their phones. Local 10's video shows the car’s frame nearly severed, with crews moving carefully around the wreckage as they secured the scene. Authorities temporarily shut down the stretch of Southwest 272nd Street while they cleared debris and collected evidence.
Why Tree Strikes Are Especially Dangerous
Crashes involving trees and other fixed objects are often especially deadly because the object absorbs very little impact energy, which increases how much the vehicle crushes inward and how badly occupants can be hurt, the Federal Highway Administration notes. FHWA roadway-departure safety guidance calls for countermeasures such as removing or shielding vulnerable trees and installing barriers in problem areas to reduce catastrophic run-off-road collisions.
Miami-Dade investigators are still working to piece together exactly what happened. Officials have not released the names of those involved or said whether speed or impairment played a role. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
