If Meekland Avenue is part of your daily routine, get ready to reroute. Alameda County plans to fully close Meekland at the San Lorenzo Creek bridge for roughly a year starting June 8, so crews can demolish and replace the span. Through traffic will be blocked between E. Lewelling Boulevard and Paseo Grande, while residents and emergency vehicles will still be allowed in from either side of the construction zone. County officials say the rebuilt bridge will come with wider sidewalks, upgraded ADA access and a Class II bike lane aimed at making things safer for students and neighborhood commuters.
What’s closing and when
According to Supervisor Lena Tam's newsletter, the full closure will run from June 8 through April 23, 2027. During that stretch, all through traffic between E. Lewelling Boulevard and Paseo Grande will be shut down so crews can safely demolish and rebuild the existing San Lorenzo Creek bridge.
The county notes that local access will be kept open as much as possible. Drivers will still be able to reach homes and businesses from Paseo Grande up to the south side of the bridge and from E. Lewelling Boulevard down to the north side, even though they will not be able to cross the creek.
What the project will do
As outlined by the Alameda County Public Works Agency, the rebuilt bridge will be wider to fit new sidewalks and a Class II bicycle facility. The project will also upgrade ADA curb ramps, add high-visibility crosswalks and tweak stormwater features.
Public Works says the goal is twofold: improve the long-term structural reliability of the bridge and create safer walking and biking connections to nearby schools and homes along the Meekland corridor.
Transit and neighborhood impacts
Expect some headaches for transit riders and drivers while the work is underway. AC Transit has previously listed the Meekland and E. Lewelling stops among closures and has pointed riders to nearby alternative stops for affected lines.
Neighbors should also be ready for detour signs, temporary route shifts on busy construction days and some changes to school pickup and drop-off patterns as crews move through the corridor. The closure will not physically cut off access to either side of Meekland, but it will force people to loop around rather than cross the creek at the usual spot.
How to stay updated
For maps, schedules and FAQs, the county is urging residents to keep an eye on official project updates or call in with questions. Contact the Alameda County Public Works Agency at (510) 670-5591 or [email protected], or visit the Alameda County Public Works Agency Meekland Avenue project page for detailed maps and sign-up options.
The closure notice first surfaced in a post from the Alameda County Sheriff on X. Residents along Meekland are being urged to start planning alternate routes well before the June 2026 start date and to watch for any schedule tweaks from the county as work gets closer.
