A 66-year-old man jailed in Clayton County has died after what authorities say was a savage assault inside his cell, and his cellmate is now facing a murder charge. Officials identified the victim as Michael Hunt, who was discovered unresponsive in his cell on March 27 and rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he died days later. County officials say fellow inmate Jalen Leverette has been charged with malice murder, aggravated assault and battery on an elderly person.
According to Atlanta News First, the sheriff's office says the beating involved repeated blows, including strikes and stomping, that left Hunt unconscious inside the cell. Investigators have not publicly discussed a possible motive and are still working the case inside the housing unit where the attack occurred. Officials say Hunt was taken to Grady immediately after deputies found him and never recovered.
Preliminary findings indicate the assault happened inside the jail's mental health housing unit, and Leverette was taken into custody inside the same facility, WSB Radio reported. Deputies locked down the area, and the sheriff's office opened an internal investigation into what unfolded in the unit. Officials have not said if security camera footage from inside the jail will ever be made public.
FOX 5 Atlanta reported that Hunt, who was 66, is now at the center of renewed calls from advocates who want the state to intervene in conditions at the Clayton County Jail. The deadly beating is increasing pressure on local leaders to answer for long-running concerns about safety inside the lockup. Community organizers argue that repeated in-custody deaths show the facility needs far more oversight than it currently has.
Violence and overcrowding have been persistent concerns
Violence at the jail has been under the microscope before. Hoodline reported a deadly stabbing at the facility in May 2024 that critics linked to overcrowding and ongoing staffing shortages. That reporting, along with other coverage, has laid out a pattern of serious incidents that advocates say the county has not fully resolved. Hunt's death is likely to reignite demands for independent oversight and a deeper review of how the jail is run.
Legal implications
Malice murder is one of Georgia's most serious homicide charges. State law defines it as an unlawful killing carried out "with malice aforethought," either express or implied, and it carries potential penalties up to life in prison or death, according to the Georgia code. By filing that charge, prosecutors are signaling they believe they can show the level of intent or extreme disregard for life that the statute requires. The district attorney's office is expected to review surveillance footage, medical records, autopsy findings and witness statements as it decides whether to file any additional counts.
The Clayton County Sheriff's Office says the investigation is ongoing and that Leverette remains held inside the jail, Atlanta News First reported. Family members and advocates are likely to keep pressing for answers as investigators sort through the evidence. Officials have urged anyone with information about what happened inside that cell to contact the sheriff's office.
