A 45-year-old Cleveland man died Tuesday after being brought to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center from an unknown location, and his death is now under review as a suspected homicide, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner.
The decedent has been identified as Cleveland resident Nicholas Quarterman. He was taken to the hospital on Tuesday and died later that same day. Investigators are still working to piece together how and from where he was brought in, and what exactly led to his death. Cleveland police have not released additional details as the case moves forward.
According to 19 News, the medical examiner has listed Quarterman’s death as a suspected homicide and formally identified him in their records. The station reports that University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center notified the examiner’s office about the case on Thursday and that it has reached out to the Cleveland Division of Police for comment.
What 'suspected homicide' means
When medical examiners use the term “homicide” as a manner of death, they are signaling that another person’s actions are believed to have caused the death. It is a clinical, medical determination, not a courtroom verdict about criminal intent.
