What started as a routine grocery delivery in Margate ended with a trip to the Broward County jail, after police say a man posed as an Instacart driver to get into the home of a woman who uses a wheelchair and steal her purse. Authorities identified the suspect as 28-year-old Jeremiah Isaiah Williams of Oakland Park. He was arrested on Tuesday and is facing charges that include exploitation of a disabled adult and theft from a dwelling.

How the ruse worked

According to Margate Police records, the woman had placed a Walgreens order through the Instacart app. The app listed a shopper profile under the name "Cynthia W," described as an older woman. Investigators say that instead, a man in a dark-colored sedan showed up with the order.

Police say the victim mentioned she had trash to take out, and the driver offered to help. Officers allege he grabbed a garbage bag and a cardboard box, appeared to assist, then went through the items and left quickly. About two hours later, the woman realized her Coach purse was gone, as reported by Margate Talk.

Legal stakes

Under Florida law, exploitation of an elderly person or disabled adult is a felony, and the potential penalties depend on how much property is taken. If the value is under $10,000, the crime is classified as a third-degree felony; larger amounts can bring tougher charges and longer sentences. The statute spells out the definitions, categories and sentencing ranges used in cases involving vulnerable adults, according to the Florida Statutes.

Investigation and arrest

Detectives followed an $85 charge on the victim’s American Express card to a RaceTrac station in Pompano Beach. Investigators say surveillance video and license-plate reader data tied that transaction to a vehicle registered to Williams.

They also noted that the Instacart profile name matched the suspect’s mother, and say the victim later picked Williams out of a photo lineup. He was booked into the Broward County main jail, where his bail was set at $40,000. Police estimate the total loss at about $435, according to Margate Talk.

What neighbors should do

Authorities are urging residents who use delivery apps to double-check driver details in the app before opening the door, keep purses and other valuables out of sight during drop-offs and avoid inviting unexpected delivery workers inside.
