A routine trip to a Goodwill on Horizon Boulevard turned into a police matter when officers say a 42-year-old Horizon City man stomped on a 10-year-old boy's foot during a heated argument. Raul David Reyes was arrested and booked into the county detention center on a felony charge of injury to a child with intent to cause bodily injury. Emergency medical crews checked the boy at the scene after he began crying, according to police.
What happened at the store
Police were called on April 25 to the Goodwill in the 13000 block of Horizon Boulevard after a verbal dispute broke out, according to court documents. Investigators say Reyes was arguing with a woman identified as Flor Aldaba Soto when the situation escalated. Officers allege Reyes "aggressively approached" a juvenile and then stomped on the child's foot, prompting the child to cry and triggering a response from emergency personnel, who were dispatched to evaluate the injury.
Reyes told officers he was upset after Aldaba Soto tossed a wedding ring into the road and admitted he had been yelling, documents state. Aldaba Soto, however, told investigators he had not assaulted her. According to KVIA, police initially detained Reyes as part of a family-violence investigation before moving forward with a felony charge tied to the child’s reported injury.
Booking and witness statements
Witnesses at the scene told officers that Reyes admitted to stomping on the child's foot, according to the documents. One family member chose not to press charges, but prosecutors proceeded with the case anyway.
Booking records show Reyes was processed at the county detention facility. Media reports state that he was not granted bond because of prior felony convictions and remains in custody while his case moves through the courts. The incident was covered by local outlets and later republished by AOL.
What the charge means
Under Texas law, “injury to a child” is a felony offense. The exact level of felony and possible punishment depend on the defendant’s intent and how serious the injury is. Texas Penal Code Sec. 22.04 spells out the rules for cases involving bodily injury or serious bodily injury to a child and allows prosecutors to seek tougher penalties when aggravating factors apply. For the statute’s full language and sentencing ranges, see the Texas Penal Code.
Horizon City police say the investigation is still active and that court filings will determine how the case proceeds. Reyes’s next court date was not included in the early reports. Officials said the department and county records will provide updates as the legal process continues, according to KVIA.
