U.S. 1 Safety Work Back In Focus
U.S. 1, known locally as South Dixie Highway, is a major arterial through south Miami-Dade that has long been the subject of safety reviews and improvement planning. The Florida Department of Transportation's Cutler Bay project list shows multiple U.S. 1 design efforts aimed at reducing crashes and upgrading crosswalks, sidewalks and signals, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.
Local Plans And Pedestrian Gaps
Cutler Bay's transportation master plan and regional analyses highlight gaps in pedestrian connectivity along the corridor and recommend multimodal fixes near transit stops and busy intersections. Planning documents outline proposals ranging from improved sidewalks to changes in signal timing to make crossings safer for people on foot, as detailed in town and county materials from the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization.
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol continue to investigate and have not released further details, CBS News Miami reported. We will update this article when officials provide additional information.
