An early-morning bike ride in Greenacres turned deadly Monday when a bicyclist was struck and killed in a hit-and-run just before 6 a.m. near the intersection of 10th Avenue and Perry Avenue, by Ira Van Bullock Park. Deputies shut down part of 10th Avenue while they processed the scene. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released the victim’s name as the investigation continues.
According to WPBF, the sheriff’s office responded to the fatal crash and said it is following investigative leads. WPBF reported that 10th Avenue, just west of Haverhill Road, was closed as deputies worked the scene.
A Known Trouble Spot
A PBSO District 16 report included in recent city meeting materials shows stretches of 10th Avenue repeatedly landing among the top accident locations in the area. The monthly data list multiple hit-and-run and other motor-vehicle crashes on corridors intersecting with Perry Avenue and Haverhill Road, underscoring long-running safety concerns along that route.
Countywide Trend
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office notes that the county ranks in the top quarter of Florida counties for pedestrian and bicycle crashes, with more than 1,300 collisions and dozens of fatalities recorded in 2022. PBSO says it conducts high-visibility enforcement details and public education in an effort to reduce crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists.
How to Help Investigators
The sheriff’s office told WPBF that deputies are pursuing investigative leads and are asking anyone with information to come forward. Witnesses or drivers with dash-cam video are urged to contact PBSO District 16, which covers Greenacres, or to use the sheriff’s online tip resources available through the department’s website.
The investigation remains active, and officials say updates will be released as new information is developed. Anyone who saw the crash or captured it on video is asked to reach out to deputies to help identify the driver involved.
