A quiet Saturday afternoon on Hamilton Avenue turned into a crime scene when police say a Trenton woman opened fire in broad daylight, wounding a man as children stood nearby and bullets tore into a neighboring home.
The March 9 shooting left a 27-year-old man injured and kicked off a multi-unit investigation that stretched into April, ultimately ending with an arrest last week.
Officers were first alerted by a ShotSpotter activation around 3:58 p.m. and arrived to find the victim in a parking lot on Hamilton Avenue. He was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center and listed in stable condition, according to Daily Voice. That outlet also published a photo credited to Trenton Police.
Detectives later determined that children were present during the gunfire and that rounds struck a nearby residence, Patch reports. Trenton's Shooting Response Team and Criminal Intelligence Support Unit identified 28-year-old Shantell Lynch as the suspected shooter, and members of the U.S. Marshals Service took her into custody on April 14, police said.
Charges And Custody
Lynch is now facing a long list of charges, including criminal attempted homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, aggravated assault for pointing a firearm, possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal mischief, according to News 12 New Jersey. She is being held at the Mercer County Correctional Center while her case moves through the courts.
Investigation Still Active
Trenton police say their shooting unit and criminal intelligence team pieced together the evidence that led to arrest warrants, which the Marshals then used to track Lynch down, Patch reports. Investigators have not released any information about a possible motive and say the probe remains active.
