A burst of late-morning gunfire rattled a south Minneapolis neighborhood Friday, leaving two men in the hospital after police say their car was hit by bullets, jumped a curb and slammed into a tree.
According to Minneapolis police, the two men walked away from the wrecked vehicle before officers tracked them down nearby. Detectives are now working the case, and so far no arrests have been announced.
What police said
Officers were called to reports of shots fired on the 3200 block of Bloomington Avenue at 10:54 a.m. When they arrived, they found an unoccupied vehicle that had crashed into a curb and a tree and showed signs of damage. Investigators say the car appeared to have been struck while it was moving, possibly by gunfire from another vehicle.
Police later found one man on the 3100 block of 15th Street and the other on the 3000 block of 15th Avenue. Both had apparent injuries that authorities described as not life-threatening and were taken to a hospital for treatment. As reported by CBS Minnesota, investigators are still trying to figure out what sparked the shooting.
Neighborhood context
The shooting adds to a run of violence in south Minneapolis. In March, an attack at an apartment on the 2500 block of 17th Avenue South left a 19-year-old dead and a 16-year-old wounded, an incident in which gunfire ripped through a south Minneapolis apartment.
Last spring, earlier mass shootings on nearby corridors drew a heavy police response and stirred concerns about retaliatory violence in the area, as reported by FOX 9.
