Where It Happened
Hartsell Park at 65 Sunderland Road SW is a neighborhood hub, home to a recreation center, ballfields, courts and a playground. The City of Concord has been asking residents for feedback on a master plan to update the park’s facilities and address safety and accessibility concerns, a process that has put the park’s future in the spotlight even before Thursday’s violence.
Police Response
Concord detectives with the criminal investigations unit processed the crime scene and called for anyone who saw or recorded anything to come forward. As reported by WCNC Charlotte, officers said they are not releasing the victims’ names while the investigation remains active.
Local Context
The shooting comes as Concord continues to grapple with recent violence. In February, a mass shooting left two people dead and two others injured and led to multiple arrests, according to WBTV. City officials and police in recent years have pursued park upgrades and community safety initiatives as part of broader efforts to keep public spaces secure.
