A walk near a neighborhood park on Jacksonville’s Westside turned into a nightmare for one family after a 15-year-old boy was beaten, robbed and threatened while out with friends, leaving his mother demanding to know how something like this could happen so close to home. The teen’s mother, Katrina Walker, told investigators that a group of strangers attacked her son, took his belongings and made threats as he and his friends were walking near Melvin Park off 103rd Street, according to News4JAX. Walker says she is now pushing city leaders to step up safety measures around the park before another family goes through the same ordeal.
About Melvin Park
Melvin Park sits in the Melvin Park subdivision just west of I‑295 between Wilson Boulevard and 103rd Street, with the city listing its address as 4555 Jade Drive W. The City of Jacksonville parks page notes that a new playground was installed in fall 2022 and highlights amenities including security lighting, details some residents now want the city to take a hard look at in light of the reported assault.
Calls for change
Walker has made it clear she is not planning to let the incident fade into the background. She told reporters she wants stronger safety measures in and around the park and intends to press neighborhood leaders and city officials for quick action, according to News4JAX. For her, the park is supposed to be a place where teens can hang out without ending up in the middle of a police report.
