Morning drivers on Jacksonville’s Westside ran into flashing lights and detours Monday after a car veered off Edgewood Avenue North and slammed into a power pole, killing a woman in her mid-40s and injuring a man in his early 40s, authorities said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, while the man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. Crash investigators shut down the intersection of Edgewood Avenue North and Shenandoah Avenue, and the roadway near the 3000 block of Edgewood Avenue North stayed closed into the morning while crews worked the scene.
What officials said
Investigators with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the vehicle left the roadway and hit a JEA power pole, and confirmed that no other cars were involved, according to First Coast News. The station reported that the single-vehicle crash happened near the 3000 block of Edgewood Avenue North at Shenandoah Avenue and that crews expected to keep the road closed until about 10 a.m. Detectives said they are still working to determine what led up to the wreck.
Edgewood corridor safety concerns
This deadly crash is the latest serious incident along the Edgewood Avenue corridor, which has seen a string of violent and fatal events in recent months. They include a March road-rage shooting that left a driver dead near an I-95 ramp, per March road-rage shooting, and a fatal motorcycle crash reported by Action News Jax. Residents and traffic-safety advocates say those cases highlight how quickly a single-vehicle incident can turn deadly on busy Westside routes.
Investigation under way
JSO investigators stayed on scene for hours Monday and reiterated that they are working to piece together what caused the crash, according to First Coast News. The sheriff’s office has not released additional details and said more information will be shared as the investigation moves forward.
