El Pasoans are stepping out to clear skies and a cool start in the low 50s this morning, but the Borderland is in for a quick warmup. By this afternoon, highs will climb to around 83°F under mostly sunny skies, and those calm early breezes will start to flex, setting the stage for a much windier Friday with patchy dust and elevated fire danger.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
Winds stay on the mild side early today, running roughly 1 to 12 mph, then ramp up by afternoon into the 15 to 20 mph range with stronger gusts later on. Friday looks even windier, with west-southwest winds of 7 to 20 mph and gusts up to 28 mph on the plains. The higher Sacramento Mountains could see much stronger gusts, and evening commutes may run into sudden crosswinds or brief drops in visibility where dust gets kicked up, according to the National Weather Service El Paso.
Fire Weather And Safety
Very dry air paired with those gusty winds will push fire-weather risk higher later this week. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect Friday for parts of southern New Mexico. Forecasters are urging people to skip outdoor burning, keep grills and machinery away from dry vegetation, and secure anything that could blow around in the wind. If you have yard work, projects, or outdoor plans that involve tools or open flames, try to get them done today or early Saturday before the front moves in, as reported by KVIA.
Weekend Cool Down And Rain Chance
A cool front will slide through Friday night into Saturday morning, knocking afternoon highs back into the 70s on Saturday. Moisture makes a brief return Sunday, when east-southeast winds and a 30 to 40 percent chance of showers will favor areas mainly east of the Rio Grande. By Monday, drier westerly flow is expected to return and conditions should settle back toward more typical seasonal norms.
