A late-night emergency room visit in Washington County turned chaotic when, according to police, a North Charleroi man allegedly attacked a doctor and two security guards at Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital early Saturday morning. Staff told investigators the confrontation erupted after they asked the patient to stop livestreaming inside the emergency department.
Arrest and charges
Carroll Township police say they were called to the hospital around 1:30 a.m. When officers reviewed court documents and hospital surveillance video, they saw the patient, identified as Victor Tyree, punching, pushing, and grabbing a doctor and two security guards, according to WPXI. Police say Tyree was combative at the station and now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
Video and hospital response
Court records and surveillance footage indicate the incident started when staff told Tyree to stop livestreaming from inside the emergency room. Channel video reportedly captured the assaults. In a statement provided to Channel 11, Penn Highlands officials said, "At Penn Highlands Healthcare, we have zero tolerance for any form of physical or verbal aggression, harassment or abuse toward our staff, patients, or visitors," according to WPXI.
Threat to health care workers
People inside the hospital said the ordeal was unsettling but, sadly, not shocking. Health care workers across the country report increasing harassment and physical attacks in emergency departments. National data show the health care and social assistance sector has the highest counts and incidence rates of workplace violence that lead to days away from work, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and CDC/NIOSH has urged hospitals and clinics to prioritize protections for front-line staff facing those risks.
What happens next
Tyree has been booked and faces criminal proceedings as the investigation continues in Washington County, according to CBS News Pittsburgh, which reported the arrest and published footage from the scene.
