A deadly crash early Friday shut down the exit ramp from the Southwest Freeway to the IH-610 West Loop in Houston, choking inbound traffic and sending commuters on long, frustrating detours. The collision involved two vehicles, and emergency crews immediately closed the connector while they worked the scene. Drivers reported extended backups along the Southwest Freeway and nearby surface streets as tow trucks and investigators moved in to clear the wreckage.
According to Houston TranStar, the crash happened on the connector from US-59, also known as the Southwest Freeway, to the 610 West Loop and triggered a complete shutdown of that ramp. TranStar traffic cameras showed heavy inbound congestion, and traffic operators logged major delays on surrounding routes. Officials at the scene said they did not yet know how long the closure would last while crews continued to remove the damaged vehicles and investigate what led up to the collision.
Advice for drivers
KHOU reporter Sammy Turner shared guidance from KHOU traffic expert Jennifer Reyna, who urged drivers to look at Beltway 8, Bissonnet and the carpool lane as alternate routes. Reyna advised motorists to exit the Southwest Freeway as soon as they notice brake lights stacking up and to shift to side streets when it is safe to do so. KHOU reported that the ramp closure forced many drivers to divert well ahead of the loop. Officials asked motorists to allow extra time for their trips and to steer clear of the area if possible until crews can fully reopen the connector.
Why the West Loop gridlocks quickly
The US-59 and IH-610 interchange ranks among the region’s most notorious choke points, and even brief lane or ramp closures there can ripple into outsized delays across Houston. Prior coverage from tops list of most congested roads and historical reporting in the Houston Chronicle has detailed how the tight geometry, heavy traffic volumes and ongoing reconstruction work combine to make the West Loop especially vulnerable to cascading backups. Transportation analysts say those same ingredients help explain why crashes and closures at the Southwest Freeway and 610 interchange so often bring the morning commute to a crawl.
Investigators remained on-site into the morning, and authorities asked anyone with information about the crash to contact local police. Drivers are urged to follow live updates from Houston TranStar and local broadcasters for current detour options and word on when the connector will reopen.
