FedEx is pulling the plug on three of its St. Louis-area shipping centers this September, shutting down neighborhood drop-off and pickup spots in Maplewood, Earth City and south St. Louis as part of a broader cost-cutting shuffle across its network.
Details of the closures
According to FOX2, the FedEx ship centers at 3025 S. Hanley Road in Maplewood, 13342 Lakefront Drive in Earth City and 2735 Chouteau Avenue in south St. Louis are set to close in September. The station reports FedEx told staff the shutdowns were scheduled months in advance and that “certain employees will be offered other roles within the company.” It was not immediately clear how many workers at the three locations will ultimately lose their jobs.
Part of a wider network reshuffle
FedEx has described moves like this as part of a multi-year network transformation designed to streamline operations and cut structural costs, a strategy laid out in recent investor and newsroom materials. As detailed by FedEx, programs such as Network 2.0 sit at the center of that effort. The trend has already included larger facility wind-downs elsewhere, including a Coppell, Texas logistics campus covered by the Houston Chronicle, underscoring that the St. Louis closures are part of a national pattern.
What this means for workers and customers
FOX2 reports FedEx informed employees at the affected centers months ago and says the company will support impacted workers with job-placement assistance, relocation help or severance, with some staffers potentially moving into alternate roles. Customers who relied on the three locations are being directed to other nearby drop-off points and to FedEx’s online location finder for alternatives, per the company site (FedEx). The company has not yet released a public headcount for how many employees work at the three sites.
FedEx has framed the changes as part of broader network optimization while reiterating its commitment to support affected team members. Residents and local businesses would be wise to keep an eye on posted signs and company updates as the September shutdown date gets closer.
