An early-morning armed robbery in Phoenix turned into a more-than-30-mile police pursuit that ended in Buckeye on Sunday, according to authorities. The chase came to a halt when the suspect vehicle crashed at the Watson Road exit, where five juveniles were detained. One of them was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Robbery In Phoenix, Chase Along I-10
Shortly after 1:30 a.m., Phoenix police responded to reports of an armed robbery near 39th and Maryland avenues north of Bethany Home Road, according to Arizona's Family. The outlet reports the Arizona Department of Public Safety saying several minors, some armed with guns, stole property and fled in a white Jeep. Officers later located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver took off.
The pursuit headed west along Interstate 10 for more than 30 miles before the Jeep exited at Watson Road in Buckeye, where the chase reached its sudden end.
Crash, Detentions And Multi-Agency Response
After leaving the freeway, the Jeep reportedly struck a parked car and the suspects ran from the scene before being detained a short distance away. Multi-agency resources, including state troopers and aviation units, are commonly deployed on interstate pursuits to help locate fleeing vehicles and reduce risk to other motorists, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing as officers work to determine exactly what was taken in the robbery and which juveniles could face charges.
Legal Consequences
Armed robbery ranks among Arizona's most serious theft offenses and can be charged as armed robbery under state law when a weapon is involved, carrying felony exposure and substantial penalties, according to Shouse Law. Whether the juveniles are prosecuted in juvenile court or as adults will depend on their ages, prior records, and prosecutorial decisions. The federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention has documented Arizona's mechanisms for transferring serious cases to adult court.
Authorities told Arizona's Family that the investigation remains ongoing and that potential charges will be determined once it is complete. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact local law enforcement.
